Dear Parents/Guardians,
Every spring, all Multilingual Learners/English Language Learners (MLs/ELLs) in grades K-12, are required to take the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement test (NYSESLAT). This test determines your child’s English language proficiency level. The proficiency level will determine how many minutes of ENL instruction your child will receive each week during the next school year. Please note per the Chancellor’s regulations regarding ELL services, all Commanding students will still receive ENL services for the next 2 school years.
The NYSESLAT consists of four subtests (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). The Speaking Subtest is administered individually. Please note the speaking test window is from April 15, 2024 - May 24, 2024. The remaining subtests will be administered in a group setting. ENL students who receive special education services will receive the appropriate testing accommodations as indicated in their IEP.
The remaining three sub-tests are listening, reading, and writing. These sub-tests are designed as follows: Session 1: Listening, Reading & Writing; Session 2: Listening, Reading & Writing; and
Session 3: Listening, Reading & Writing. The testing window for this session of the test is May 13, 2024 - May 24, 2024. Please note this is a very short testing window. It is important that students be in attendance each day so that they can take each of the four subtests.
Please note that all test dates and times have been coordinated with building events to avoid conflicts with activities that may be occuring in school. Please make every effort to make sure your child is in attendance on these days. Your child MUST take every part of this assessment to receive a valid score and proper placement based on proficiency level for the following school year.
Sincerely,
Ms. Boyd & Ms. Biggers
