News and Announcements

Greetings from your new Chancellor

Dear Principals, Superintendents, and FSC Executive Directors,

I am excited to join you in serving New York City’s public school students, families, educators, and communities.

Thank you for your well wishes and many offers of support. I have a lot to learn from you—and with you. At the same time, I will support, empower, and listen to you. I want to hear more about your successes and challenges, so that I can help you grow professionally.

As part of my citywide listening tour, I am also meeting parents and students. I would like principals to help me introduce myself to families by emailing and/or printing and backpacking a letter to families today, April 9. You can download and print the letter in English and nine other languages here. Please also share it with your parent coordinators and other staff members.

As Chancellor, I am eager to build on the great work our administrators, educators, students, and families are already doing. I share Mayor Bill de Blasio’s commitment to the City’s Equity and Excellence for All agenda, an investment in our students’ futures that includes such initiatives as Pre-K for All, Universal Literacy, Algebra for All, AP for All, and College Access for All, designed to lift up all students.

I am also committed to building your capacity to lead this charge and strengthen teaching and learning in every classroom. Together, we will build strong schools in every neighborhood, partner with families and communities, spur collaboration, and develop the leaders of tomorrow. You are indispensable to our efforts to propel students and schools forward.

The DOE’s core values reflect my own approach to school system improvement. Throughout my nearly 30-year career in public education—as a teacher, principal, and district superintendent—I have always believed that a high-quality education is the great equalizer. It is the best way to empower the next generation. As educators, we are fortunate to go to work every day knowing we are part of the solution.

It is my honor to share this journey with such talented and innovative leaders, and I look forward to meeting you in the coming months.

Sincerely,

Richard A. Carranza

Chancellor
